Earlier this morning I was sitting in back of the Lower Haight Street Katz Bagels, reviewing edits to a novel I’m working on.
At the end of each page I reviewed, I took a bit of my salt bagel or a sip of my fresh squeezed orange juice.
Encouraged by the lack of red ink I saw, I mumbled and jotted down comments to myself—changes I want to make or think about later.
For those who’ve never visited the Lower Haight Street Katz, their back seating area looks like a terrarium in reverse.
Bordered by large floor-to-ceiling windows, it provides a clear view of a lush green garden filled with pygmy palms, ferns, shrubs and moss covered bricks.
This morning’s rain made the garden look like a lost clip from the movie Baraka.
During a moment to enjoy my view of the garden, I thought how bored the plants within must be of me.
Then again, who knows what excites plants.
I might make for a great view…although I doubt it.
As I sat, ate, drank and reviewed, a stranger walked up and stood beside me.
He was thin and tan and looked European.
He wore a loose fitting brown leather jacket, natural white corduroy pants and brown stitched shoes.
“Do you like my shoes?” he asked.
“Yes,” I replied “They’re nice. Italian?”
“Mexican, I think.”
The stranger smiled adjusted his coat and walked away.
I sat back, took a breath and thought about the stranger's shoes.

"Well folks… This is it. The completion of a story that began over ten years ago, and slowly came to life over the course of the past year.
For all those who’ve been reading along, I thank you dearly. To all those who listened to, and put up with, my rambling brainstorming sessions about a guy named Jonathan Normal, I’m forever in your debt."

Heaven© — The tale of a methamphetamine addict named Eloise Fortune who inherits $42,000 and an isolated cabin in Strawberry, California—a small town tucked deep in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Together with her new found boyfriend, Kyle, she sets off for her mountain oasis supplied with junk food, candy, soft drinks, beer, and an ample stash of drugs, creating what she considers to be "Heaven". With winter fast approaching, nature has a hardy laugh at Eloise and Kyle's expense.
The Mayor of Laundryland© — Charley Milford's a good guy, a little slow, but a good guy nevertheless. Thirty-seven years old, he lives with his mother who feeds, dresses and sends him off to work every weekday morning. His job, which he takes very seriously, is to clean and maintain the Laundryland in Castro Valley, California. Loved by all who know him Charley has had his job for nearly twenty years. And, during that time, not much has come his way that he couldn't handle. That is, until a young boy locks himself into an industrial washing machine—Charley was prepared for that one.
Paging Mr. Dawson© — Scott Dawson went to all the right schools, made all the right connections and landed all the right jobs. But none of that matters to him when, two weeks before his wedding day, his fiancée dumps him for another man. Sick of the sympathy his east coast friends and family relentlessly dole out to him, he secretly takes a flight to San Francisco. There, he indulges in an extended depression, before, one day, reemerging from his rented home a new man. He picks up a job, turns a failing company into a winning one and returns to the top of his game. Only one problem… He's a druged out, sex addict on a path of self destruction.
Whatever Ever After© — Ever been in a relationship that makes no sense to anyone but you? One that your friends and family insist isn't right for you, but you know works just fine? If you answered yes, you'll understand the backdrop to "Whatever Ever After". The story of a twisted love affair, that'll confuse the masses, destroy the myth of "Mr. & Ms. Right" and give the fucked up and broken among us (raises hand) a love story they can relate to.
The Black Pill© — Eric Thomas chooses friends who give him access—access to parties, drugs and girls. Such is the reason why he spends his free time with Ramirez, a local pimp who pays Eric with good times and drugs for “driving favors”. When a friend of Eric’s, decides she wants to take a crack at prostitution, Eric obliges with an introduction to Ramirez. The fallout of Eric’s introduction, and his friend’s change of mind, sets him off on an unexpected flight for his life.
The last chapter of "Disturbingly Normal" is on its way (I’ll likely post it in a week or two). After that, a short break from writing. After that...

Initially slated to contain four short stories, I’m starting to lean toward five, maybe more—I’m fluid about these things.

Chapter 11, "The Forgotten", was just completed less than a minute ago. The ride that is Jonathan Normal's journey of uncommon self discovery is nearly complete.
I can already hear the faint hum of the closing credit song.
Yes… In my mind, my book has a closing credit song. I’ll be playing it once Chapter 12, and, in turn, the book, is competed.

A friend just sent me an email telling me a Dubstar song she likes reminded her of the main character in my book, "Soft Candy".
The following was my reponce:
The Dubstar song you like, “St. Swithin’s Day”, is a cover of a Billy Brag song. Written back in 1984, the song débuted on his album “Brewing Up With Billy Brag”.
Link:http://www.billybragg.co.uk/releas es/albums/brewing_up/brew7.html
I was 12 years old when I first heard it. And, ever since then, I've thought how cool a name Saint Swithin would be. In turn, when it came time to choose a name for my protagonist in “Soft Candy”, the thoughts of a 12 year old kid poured out onto my notepad.
The Polaroids that hold us together
Will surely fade away
Like the love that we spoke of forever
On St Swithin's Day...
Thanks for bring back the memory. (smile)

I finished the introduction to Chapter 11, on account it possesses plot spoilers, I won’t be posting it until the whole chapter is completed. My point for mentioning its completion is to let you know things are moving along well.
Speaking of moving along… I finished the plot outlines for my “The Mud of Eden”© shorts.
As mentioned before, each of the shorts are very different. Primarily, they were chosen among my myriad of tabled storylines for three reasons:
1) They all tell stories of people who are fucked up in some way
2) Their storylines are not complex enough to develop into a novel
3) And, finally, I need a break from writing extended pieces (i.e. I’m tired)
Once again the tiles of the shorts are:
Heaven (title mistyped before)
The Mayor of Laundryland
Paging Mr. Dawson
Whatever Ever After

Well folks, I just received the updated galleys for “Soft Candy” (the first and second round required fixes), and everything looks great! I’m ready to approve and will be doing so tonight, along side Kristen. She’s been supporting my gallery revisions (and putting up with my stress regarding), and so I think it only fair she be a part of the pressing of the “Galleys Approved” button.
In the very near future, “Soft Candy” will be going to print!

I just finished the draft of Chapter 10 (The Chiromancer).
Put simply, you're all in for a treat! (smile)
Once the internal edit is completed, I'll post (likley later this week).
